Applications

  1. The basic concepts of smart fluids (activated by an energy source such as magnetism, electric field, light, temperature, etc) can’t be applied readily in a typical wellbore due to various reasons:

    • limited size (2”-30” diameter tubulars with restrictions)
    • depth (up to 5000m)
    • operating condition (temperature, pressure, H2S, CO2 varying with depth)
    • complex fluids often changing with time (oil, gas, water)
    • telemetry and verification (e.g. measurement of properties such as viscosity at great depths)

In spite of such limitations, there are applications where this technology could help. We brainstormed ideas by a diverse team of experts with a combined experience of over 300 years and identified requirements for potential applications through gap analysis. The selected applications for our product development include but not limited to:

Drilling

Low Fracture Gradient at sidetrack exit requiring squeeze treatments

Lost circulation treatment (static and dynamic)

Completion

Preventing losses into reservoirs during installation

Zonal isolation

Workover

Temporary abandonment plugs

Water shut-off treatments

Reservoir management

Improving waterflood and sweep efficiency

Injection conformance

Well management

Sustained casing pressure
